Addis Ababa is the capital city of Ethiopia and the capital of the Horn of Africa. Addis Ababa means "New Flower". It is where the government buildings are located, with the recently opened Sheger Friendship Park just across the way. Addis Ababa is a modern city, with a blend of tradition with modern design. The city is a cultural, historical, and religious hub, with numerous churches, historical sites, and sites to visit.
Getting There
The most common way to get to Addis Ababa is to fly to Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD). When flying from the USA, it is possible to get a direct flight from Washington, DC. Purchase your international flight from Ethiopian Airlines to obtain the best rates on domestic flights within Ethiopia.
Travel Requirements
When flying from the USA, you must apply for an eVisa prior to departure. You should apply no later than 3 days prior to your flight's departure. Visas are not currently issued upon arrival. Kedst Selase Cathedral (Holy Trinity Cathedral)
This cathedral is the highest-ranking Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo cathedral in Addis Ababa. Numerous historical figures are buried in the church or in the churchyard, including Emperor Haile Selassie I and Empress Menen Asfaw. People come and worship outside this holy church, as well as inside.
Ethnological Museum
This museum contains notable photos and descriptions of historical events in Ethiopia, a large collection of religious crosses, the bedrooms of Emperor Haile Selassie I and Empress Menen Asfaw, and an impressive collection of instruments.
Addis Ababa University
The university is the oldest and largest university in Ethiopia. This beautiful campus also houses the Ethnological Museum.
Sheger Unity Friendship Park
Located just across from the capital buildings, this park featuring the latest in landscape design and architecture is popular for wedding photography and outdoor activities. A unique feature is a fog garden.

Formerly Africa's largest open-air market, you can find nearly anything you need at this market, including spices, fruits and vegetables, fabric, and much more!
