Unique destinations to celebrate epiphany in Ethiopia are Lalibela and Gondar.  Join in the special celebration of the Ethiopian Orthodox Epiphany, or Timkat, on January 19 which commemorates the baptism of Christ.

In Gondar, pilgrims fill the streets and make their way to the baptismal area surrounding Facilidas Baths, which is filled with water. Followers and icons are anointed with holy water to commemorate John's baptism of Christ in the waters of the River Jordan.

In Lalibela, the night before epiphany the Arc of the Covenant replica moves from the church to the baptismal site. The next morning, there is a prayer service and baptisms are performed. In the afternoon, all the Arc of the Covenant replicas are returned to the churches for safe keeping.
