Capital of the Amhara Region Bahir Dar
Bahir Dar is the administrative capital of the Amhara Region in Ethiopia. It is most known for the biodiverse environment of Lake Tana. Monastery churches can be accessed by taking a boat tour. The other main site in Bahir Dar is the Blue Nile Falls, which reached via a short hike through hills dotted with grazing cows and fields of sugar cane. Bahir Dar has a prominent university, and a number of cultural and educational events are hosted in the city.

Fun Fact
One of the main forms of transportation in this area used to be papyrus canoes, or tankwas. Although this has been replaced by bustling little bajaj cars you can arrange rides from, you will still see people in these traditional boats out fishing on Lake Tana.

On islands that are accessed by boat on Lake Tana, the monastery churches contain beautiful colorful paintings that illustrate the stories of the Bible. Some monasteries also have a museum to visit for an additional fee.
Blue Nile Falls
The Blue Nile River starts in Bahir Dar and flows 4,500 km to the Mediterranean through Sudan and Egypt. Hike through lush grasslands and fields of sugar cane alongside shepherds and enjoy this picturesque waterfall. Although the flow varies seasonally due to hydroelectric dams, this is still a beautiful area.

Bahir Dar has a large, impressive bustling open-air market that is logically laid out in a square. Saturday is market day. The local people are very happy to help you locate whatever you are searching for.
