Ethiopian New Year's is celebrated on or around September 11 each year. This is when the Ethiopian calendar restarts. Ethiopia uses a calendar that has 13 months and is based on the Julian calendar. The land is very green during this time of year, and the local version of sunflowers called enkutatash are in bloom. At many churches, chanting and celebrations go on all night and into the next morning. The Saturday before New Year's is a big market day as people prepare for the holiday. Many people will celebrate together with a feast on New Year's Day.
